State of SEO in 2018

How Difficult is Search Engine Optimization in 2018?

SEO is difficult, there is no doubt about it. The skill of moving websites in Google has become more and more tricky over the last few years. It is almost unbelievable that just 4-5 years ago, people used to be able to rank websites within a couple of weeks. Imagine that! Brand new websites on the first page of Google in just a few weeks for competitive keywords.

That is most certainly an impossible result to achieve these days for competitive keywords. As such, a lot of SEO consultants have moved on to other forms of digital marketing that offer more instant gratification, for the consultants and the clients. Who doesn’t want fast results?

That means, if you want organic traffic in 2018, you’re going to need patience. A LOT of patience!

SEO in 2018

Last year, we saw Google announce their vision of the future and want to move towards a mobile-only index. They are keeping their promise and this change is going to be rolled out in 2018 gradually. What does this mean exactly?

Google Mobile

It means that ALL websites will be ranked according to their mobile index, as that will soon be the ONLY index Google uses. You see, so far, Google has had 2 different indexes (or database of websites), one of the desktop and another for mobile and tablet devices. It would rank websites on desktop and mobile from their respective indexes. However, the change they are rolling out this year will see that ALL the rankings/websites are going to be pulled from its mobile index, regardless of whether the user is on a desktop computer or a mobile device.

Mobile Friendly Vs Mobile Optimized Websites: What is the Difference?

This is an important change for people who do not have mobile-optimized websites. Note that mobile friendly and mobile optimized are 2 very different things.

Google Search

A mobile-friendly website can just be mobile responsive, which means that the screen would stretch based on the resolution of the user’s screen.

However, mobile-optimized takes into consideration several other factors such as page loading speed on mobile devices, User Experience (UX). Search engine marketing experts MUST include this in their primary strategy to rank websites now. Hence, it is important that you consider the UX of your mobile users and ensure that your prospective clients and customers who are on mobile devices do not have any frustrations browsing your website that would make them want to leave the site.
